Mount Vernon Getaway

We were on our way to Bellingham when traffic began to back-up so we slipped off the highway and decided to explore the town of Mount Vernon.  This is not your parents Mount Vernon.  This town has seen a serious revitalization in the last several years.  There is a scenic boardwalk that follows the river. This provides more than a mile of leisurely strolling along the Skagit River. It also, provides space for community events. During the summer months they have a farmers market and other activities throughout the year.

Mount Vernon, named after George Washington’s Potamac River Estate, has been the Skagit County seat since 1890. The town is commonly known for the spring Tulip Festival. A festival coinciding with the blooming of Tulips. The fields of tulips are picturesque.

The downtown has several boutique stores, high end barber shops, a Soft Shotz Nerf battle arena, quilting shops, brew pubs, distilleries, and the historic Lincoln Theater (est. 1926).

I thought used bookstores had gone extinct, but my faith in humanity was restored when I discovered Easton Books.  The store has floor to ceiling shelves packed with a wide assortment of books.  I could spend days in this store wandering the shelves.

This is a fun weekend get a away.  The train will take you right to the downtown.  Catch the Amtrak in Seattle or at any stop along the route. It’s a great way to get there, just sit back and order a glass of wine. Mount Vernon is very walk-able, so no need for a car.  Catch a performance at the Lincoln theater, take a long walk on the boardwalk, spend the day lost in Easton’s bookstore, or take a tour of scenic Skagit Valley by renting a bike at Tulip Country Bike Tours. The town hosts a couple of Bed & Breakfasts and Hotels.

If you bring your car, make time for a scenic drive through the Skagit Valley its breathtaking when the tulips are blooming and gorgeous any other time of year.  You will pass many picturesque farmland.  For a nice beach hike drive over to Rosario Beach and enjoy their beach trails or just spend some time exploring the many tide pools. Also, Oyster Dome is a good hike.
