Canyonville’s Pioneer Park

When you are on a long road trip with your family there comes a point when you just need to stretch your legs and walk off all the “are we there yets.” When we stopped for lunch in Canyonville, Oregon, I did just that. I opted for lunch to go and headed off to explore Canyonville while my family dined.

It was a beautiful day for a walk. A bit cloudy, but the sun kept flirting from behind the clouds. I had spotted a park down by the river when we came off the exit. So, I made my way that direction. On my way I found the Canyonville Christian Academy. The school has a beautiful campus. It was started as an orphanage in 1924 by A young couple by the name of Adele and A.M. Shaffer. After the depression ended it became a Christian High School. It still operates today as a boarding school.

The campus has several historic buildings and gymnasium. It’s like a mini college campus.

Down the street from the campus you will find Pioneer Park along the Applegate Trail. The Applegate trail is the southern route of the Oregon Trail. It was blazed by the Applegate brothers in 1846.

This park is a great place for a picnic.

In this cozy town with a population of just shy of 2,000 residents the park is an important gathering place for festivals and performances. There are concession stands, a small amphitheater, covered picnic area, and a playground. On June 2nd, 2018 the town is holding its annual Jazz Festival at Pioneer Park. Admission is free and it looks to be a lot of fun.

Wander toward the river and you will find an adorable little covered bridge.

I also passed this adorable house and its cute little garage. They look like something from a fairytale.

The town hosts a quaint Main Street with adorable little boutique shops. There is also a decent sized casino near the town.
