Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary

This Abbey is nestled in the rural community of Mount Angel just outside Silverton, Oregon. The Abbey is both a seminary and a conference center. The campus is beautiful and serene. The seminary has a lot to see, but be sure not to miss the small museum they have on site.

On a recent trip to Silver Falls we decided to stop and visit this facility. As we drove up the long wooded driveway we noticed the stations of the cross lining the shoulder. Each station has a makeshift open faced chapel. The artistry of each station is exquisite.

Once we arrived at the seminary, we stopped at the bookstore and coffee shop for a map. The bookstore has books, soaps, journals, rosaries, and so much more.

When we left the bookstore we first visited the cemetery. Each headstone has its own rosary. The cemetery also has a small chapel.

Make your way up to the campus and tucked back beside the cathedral you will find annex with an arrow pointing to the basement that says museum. Here you will find a very odd eclectic collection of artifacts. There is an insect exhibit as well as a rock exhibit and religious exhibits, but the taxidermy exhibit is what we found particularly interesting. The exhibit features a large array of taxidermy animals. The most interesting are a couple of calves that were born conjoined. The museums free of charge and does take donations.

We also recommend visiting the Abbey’s art gallery and library. In the summer the Abbey host a Bach Festival. This event has been held annually since 1971. Visit their website to purchase tickets for this July event.

The cathedral is breathtaking. A giant organ fills the entire back wall of the cathedral. These pipe organs were built by Martin Ott Pipe Organ Company. The cathedral itself is a collection of fine wood work, elegant architecture, and beautiful art pieces.

The Monastary also brews it’s own beer and will soon open it’s own brewery and taproom.

Mount Angel Abbey was founded when local German Catholics pledged $1,200 and a cow to open a priory in 1882.
